Update on the Ottoman Archives, Istanbul

A brief update on the Ottoman Achives of the Office of the Prime Minister (Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivleri), Istanbul, Turkey.

There are a number of major changes afoot at many of the research institutions of Istanbul. In the past months, the reading room of the Süleymaniyye Library has moved, the Ottoman Archives of the Office of the Prime Minister (Başbakanlık Osmanlı Arşivleri) has forged ahead with plans to open a new facility, and rumors circulate about the re-opening of the Topkapı Palace Museum Archives.

In the coming weeks, I will post a full review of all of these changes. However, as some of the developments at Başbakanlık will immediately affect researchers’ ability to access material, this post will serve simply as an announcement of the most important changes.

After more than 150 years at Bab-ı Ali in Gülhane, the Ottoman archives are moving to a newly constructed facility in Kağıthane. The current facility in Gülhane will close on March 17, 2013 for one month in order to accommodate the move to Kağıthane. The new facility is scheduled to open April 16, 2013 at which time access to both the digitized archival material and original documents will be made available.

The new facility is located at Sadabad, İmrahor Caddesi, Kağıthane/İstanbul. This map shows the public transportation options to the Kağıthane campus (thanks to Emily Neumeier for producing this map).

  1. Hello,

Could you please tell me whether there are defters available in these archives of villages from Ottoman Macedonia? I am planning to be in Istanbul very soon and I would like to locate where the defter of my ancestral village in Greece is. Can you steer me the right direction in helping me locate it?

    Many thanks
